Observance of “Raising Day”

‘Home Guards’ is a voluntary force, first raised in India in December 1946, to assist the police in controlling civil disturbance and communal riots.  On 6th December every year the Raising Day of the organization is celebrated throughout the nation. On this day in 1946, first Home Guards Unit was conceived and raised in erstwhile Bombay Presidency during turmoil period of civil disorders and communal riots, as a civilian voluntary force in aid of administration as an auxiliary to Police.  

It is observed to keep the volunteers motivated to render their service to the society with high zeal and interest. The Home Guards and Civil Defence Raising Day is marked by ceremonial parade, cultural and educational functions highlighting the sacred motto “Niskama Seva” of this organization.  It is necessary to generate and sustain public interest by organizing various awareness programs regarding home guards organizations .Holding of Home Guards exhibitions, demonstrations, publication of news paper articles and advertisement etc are done to encourage the Home Guards and sensitize people about the extraordinary works rendered by Home Guards as an auxiliary force to police.
